  1. Tourists from all over the world come
  2. to visit the Shambles, one of the
  3. best preserved medieval streets  in
  4. Europe. The street was home to the
  5. butchers of York and takes it's
  6. curious name from the 'Shammels',the
  7. shelves which butchers used to
  8. display their meat. You can still see
  9. the shelves in front of some of the
  10. shop windows and the hooks where the
  11. meat was hung.

  13. Today you are more likely to find
  14. bookshops, clothing and sweet shops.
  15. In high season the street is full of
  16. people who come to see the fine
  17. examples of medieval architecture.
  18. Some of the buildings date back to
  19. 1350 and the timber framed buildings
  20. lean towards each other across the
  21. street.
